Lang Bennetts have sponsored the launch of an SOS (Save Our Spire) appeal to raise funds for the restoration of the central tower and spire of Truro Cathedral.
The restoration of the iconic central tower and spire is expected to cost £2m. Damage to the soft Bath stone over the last hundred years has led to severe erosion of the stonework, potentially making it unsafe. Bath stone was used for the spires and towers because it was much easier to carve. However, the Cornish climate, with its salt laden winds and driving rain, has done its own carving, leaving it in a precarious state.
English Heritage have, after testing at Sheffield’s Hallam University identified a solution to reduce further erosion by replacing the damaged stone with Syerford stone a much harder wearing alternative.
Jonathan Mashen, one of the Partners at Lang Bennetts said, “We are delighted to be able to support Truro Cathedral with this excellent scheme. We have sponsored the SOS leaflet because the Cathedral is so much part of the city, part of the community – and we want it to remain so.”
The restoration is part of the ‘Inspire Cornwall’ fundraising appeal launched earlier this year Over half of the funds required have already been raised; however some of the grant funding is only payable once the full amount has been raised. So this scheme is needed to bridge that gap. The SOS has been issued because it is hoped that work on the tower and spire might be able to start in 2010.
